What are the symptoms?

Symptoms are often similar to those of other more common conditions, which can make diagnosis difficult.

Because symptoms of ATTR amyloidosis may be confused with more common conditions, it can be hard to identify. Symptoms involve multiple tissues and organs, so your doctor may ask you about symptoms that affect every part of your body, even if they don't seem related to each other.

The most common symptoms are related to peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain in the hands and feet), digestive issues, and reduced heart function.

ATTR amyloidosis can cause multiple symptoms which may seem unrelated and may include:

Ocular

Symptoms related to the eyes, often causing visual changes.

Cardiac

Symptoms related to the heart, blood vessels, and circulation such as shortness of breath, swelling in the feet and ankles, and abnormal heartbeat.

Nephropathy

Damage to the kidneys.

Spinal stenosis

Pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs and feet caused by pressure on the nerves in the spine. Your doctor may also call this lumbar (lower spine) spinal stenosis.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Numbness, tingling, or pain in both hands caused by a pinched nerve in the wrists.

Peripheral sensory-motor neuropathy

Pain, numbness, or weakness, usually in the hands and feet, caused by damage to the nerves in the limbs.

Gastrointestinal

Nausea, diarrhea, or constipation caused by damage to the nerves that control digestion.

Autonomic neuropathy

Issues with involuntary body functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and sweating, caused by damage to the nerves that control the autonomic system.
