What is amyloidosis?

Amyloidosis is a group of diseases caused by the buildup of abnormal proteins, called amyloids, in tissues and organs throughout the body. These amyloid deposits can damage tissues and organs, leading to a range of symptoms and complications.

 

What is ATTR amyloidosis?

ATTR (transthyretin amyloidosis) is a type of amyloidosis caused by abnormal transthyretin (TTR). TTR is a four-piece protein produced mostly in the liver that helps transport certain necessary substances, like vitamin A and thyroxine (a hormone), throughout the body. Normally, TTR breaks down and is removed from the body overtime, so it does not have the opportunity to build up in organs and tissues.

In people with ATTR amyloidosis, the pieces of TTR fall apart, misfold, and change shape. These pieces bind together to form larger structures called amyloid fibrils, which don't break down normally.

Amyloid fibrils are sticky and clump together in tissues and between the body’s cells to form amyloid deposits. These amyloid deposits can damage tissues and organs, leading to a range of symptoms and complications.
